Shopify Forum SEO: Why Your Own Domain Matters
Updated 5 November 2026
A forum can bring new visitors to your store from Google. Each question a customer asks becomes a page, and people search for those same questions every day. This page explains how that works, why the forum's web address matters, and which settings to use.
Why a forum can rank on Google#
People search in full questions: "how do I clean a cast iron pan", "does this tent fit two people", "what size should I order". Your product pages rarely answer those questions in the customer's own words. A forum does.
Every topic in a Champ forum is its own page, with its own title and description. Over time, these pages can answer hundreds of long, specific questions. Each one can bring a small number of visitors. Together they can add up.
This takes time. A new forum with a few topics will not bring much traffic. A forum with many useful answers, built up over months, can.
Your own domain or a separate one?#
There are two common places for a forum:
| A subfolder of your store | A separate site or subdomain | |
|---|---|---|
| Example | yourstore.com/community/champ | community.yourstore.com or yourstore.forumhost.com |
| Visitors land on | Your store's own web address | A different site |
| Links people make to the forum | Point to your store's site | Point to the other site |
| Search Console and analytics | One site | A second property to set up and watch |
Google can treat a subdomain as a separate website, and a site on another company's domain is separate for certain. Many store owners prefer the subfolder because every link, visit and answer builds up the one site that sells their products.
There is also a simpler reason: a visitor who lands on a forum page is already on your store's address, one click from your products. You can link the forum's menu to your shop, and a developer can add your store's own header. A visitor on a separate forum site is further away.
Champ puts the forum in a subfolder of your store, yourstore.com/community/champ by default. You can change the /community/champ part. Read the custom forum path guide first if your forum has been live for a while, because Google must find every page again at the new address.
What Champ does for search engines#
- A page for every topic, at its own address on your store.
- A title and description for every topic, created from the topic's own content. You can
change them for a single topic.
- Search settings for every forum: a custom page title and a custom meta description.
- A sitemap that lists every forum and topic, so Google can find them all.
- Link previews (Open Graph), so shared links show a proper title, description and image.
- A "noindex" option for each forum and each topic, to keep pages out of Google, for example
a forum for off-topic chat.
All of these are explained in the design guide.
Settings that help#
- Keep spam out. Spam pages hurt the whole forum in search. Turn on the protections in the
anti-spam guide, and approve posts from new members if spam gets through.
- Hide weak forums from Google. Use the noindex option for forums with short chat, test
posts or private notes.
- Write clear forum descriptions. Each forum's description is the text Google is most
likely to show for it.
- Answer questions fully. A topic with a clear, complete answer is more useful, so it is
more likely to rank.
- Link from your products. Link from a product page to the forum topics about that
product, and from forum answers back to the product. This helps customers and search engines find both.
Members-only forums are not indexed#
Google cannot see a forum that only some customers can open. That is correct for a members-only community, but do not expect it to bring search traffic. Keep public questions in public forums.
Common questions#
Is user-generated content good for SEO? It can be, when it is useful and kept free of spam. Questions and answers from real customers use the words other customers search for. Moderate the forum, and hide forums that are mostly chat.
Will the forum appear in my Shopify sitemap? Shopify's own sitemap lists your products, collections, pages and blog posts. The forum is served by Champ, so Champ makes its own sitemap for it.
How long until forum pages show up on Google? It depends on your store's age and how often Google visits it. New pages on a small site can take days to weeks.
